If you’ve tried to get a GP appointment recently, you’ll know how frustrating it can be. Waiting a week or more for something that feels straightforward, a sore throat, a UTI, earache in a child, is a real problem. NHS Pharmacy First exists to fix exactly that.
The scheme lets you walk into a participating pharmacy and get assessed, treated, and in many cases prescribed medication, all without needing to see a GP first. It’s free, it’s NHS-funded, and it’s available right now at our NHS Pharmacy First service in Mexborough.
This guide covers everything you need to know: what the service is, which conditions it covers, who’s eligible, how it compares to a GP appointment, and what your options are if your condition falls outside the scheme.
What is NHS Pharmacy First?
NHS Pharmacy First is a government-funded scheme that allows pharmacists to assess and treat patients for seven specific minor conditions. It was rolled out nationally in February 2024 and is delivered by accredited pharmacies across England.
The whole point is faster access. Rather than waiting days or weeks for a GP slot, you can walk into a participating pharmacy, have a private consultation with a qualified pharmacist, and leave with treatment, often the same day.
At Pharmacy M, consultations are carried out in a private room, the same standard of confidentiality you’d expect anywhere. The pharmacist can supply prescription-only medications where appropriate, including antibiotics for qualifying conditions.
Which Conditions Does NHS Pharmacy First cover?
This is the part most people want to know first. The scheme covers seven conditions, each with age restrictions.

Here’s the full list:
Sore throat, for patients aged 5 and over. The pharmacist will assess symptom severity using a clinical scoring tool (FeverPAIN or Centor) and can supply antibiotics if the score indicates a bacterial cause.
Sinusitis, for patients aged 12 and over. If symptoms have lasted more than 10 days or are severe, the pharmacist can supply appropriate medication including antibiotics if clinically indicated.
Earache, for children aged 1 to 17. One of the most common reasons parents struggle to get GP appointments quickly. NHS Pharmacy First can assess and treat ear pain without a wait.
Insect bites and stings, for patients aged 1 and over. The pharmacist can assess reactions and supply antihistamines or other treatments as needed.
Impetigo, for patients aged 1 and over. A bacterial skin infection that spreads quickly in young children. Early treatment matters, and the pharmacy can prescribe antibiotic cream or tablets where needed.
Shingles, for patients aged 18 and over. Antiviral medication is most effective when started quickly, ideally within 72 hours of the rash appearing. Getting seen the same day matters here.
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) in women, for women aged 16 to 64. The pharmacist will ask about symptoms, rule out complications, and can prescribe antibiotics for uncomplicated UTIs.
If you’re unsure whether your condition qualifies, the safest thing is to come in. If it doesn’t fit the scheme, the pharmacist will point you in the right direction rather than leaving you stuck.

NHS Pharmacy First vs a GP appointment
The comparison is straightforward. For the seven covered conditions, Pharmacy First is faster, equally free, and clinically equivalent. The pharmacist follows NHS clinical pathways and can prescribe medication. This isn’t just a referral service.
Where a GP remains the right choice is for anything more complex, longer-term, or outside those seven conditions. Pharmacy First is designed to handle the specific conditions listed above, not to replace your GP for everything.
For most people with one of the seven conditions, the honest answer is: go to the pharmacy first. If the pharmacist thinks you need a GP, they’ll tell you and can refer you directly.
How to access NHS Pharmacy First at Pharmacy M
It takes three steps.

Walk in or book online. You don’t need an appointment, though booking ahead means you choose your time. Pharmacy M is open until 9pm on weekdays, which makes it genuinely accessible for people who work standard hours. Book online here or walk into 14 Adwick Road, Mexborough, S64 0DB.
Have a confidential consultation. The pharmacist will assess your symptoms in a private consultation room. They’ll ask about your medical history, current medications, and symptoms. There’s no rush.
Leave with treatment. If your condition qualifies, you’ll receive treatment before you leave. The pharmacist will explain what you’ve been given, how to take it, and when to come back or see a GP if things don’t improve.
What if my condition isn’t covered?
If your condition falls outside the seven covered conditions, you have a few options.
For medication you already have a prescription for but need urgently, our emergency medication supply service can help. This is a same-day private service for when you’ve run out of medication, lost a prescription, or can’t reach your GP in time.
If you’ve seen a private doctor or specialist and have a private prescription to fill, we can dispense that too. Private prescriptions cover medications that may not be available or funded on the NHS, or situations where you’ve chosen to go through a private route for faster access.
If you’re wondering about costs, our guide to how much a private prescription costs in the UK breaks down what to expect, including dispensing fees and medication prices.
And if your condition does need a GP, the pharmacist will tell you clearly and, where appropriate, make a referral directly.
Other NHS services at Pharmacy M
Pharmacy First is one part of what Pharmacy M offers under the NHS. While you’re here, it’s worth knowing about a couple of others.
If you need contraception, the free NHS contraception service allows eligible patients to get the contraceptive pill directly from a pharmacist, without a GP appointment. No referral needed, fully confidential.
If you haven’t had your blood pressure checked recently, our blood pressure check service is quick and available to patients who haven’t had a reading in the last year. High blood pressure has no symptoms in most people. It’s worth knowing your numbers.
Why use Pharmacy M for NHS Pharmacy First?
There are a lot of pharmacies in England signed up to NHS Pharmacy First. The reasons to choose Pharmacy M specifically come down to a few things.
The hours are unusual for a local pharmacy. Open until 9pm Monday to Friday, that means you can come in after work, after school pick-up, or when things flare up in the evening, rather than having to take time off.
Consultations happen in a private room, not at the counter. That matters when you’re talking about symptoms you’d rather not discuss in front of a queue.
The pharmacist at Pharmacy M, Mohammad Mujtaba Ahmed (GPhC Premises Reg: 9012541), is the same person delivering NHS Pharmacy First and the wider range of services here, including travel vaccinations, earwax removal, and private prescriptions. You’re not seeing a rotating roster of locums. There’s continuity of care.
